Did you know that the average age of entry into prostitution is between 14 and 15 years of age, and that nearly 80% of prostitutes in Canada started this activity when they were minors? 1

Sexual exploitation means the sexual abuse of minors (children under 18) in the context of a commercial transaction.9 Our young people are not merchandise.

  • Desensitization to affection, sexuality and intimacy
  • Negative body image
  • Decreased self-esteem
  • Isolation and withdrawal
  • Post-traumatic stress symptoms 6
  • Personality disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Suicide and suicide attempts
  • Distancing and dissociation (becoming numb to pain) 7

Acts of violence are prevalent

  • “Many studies show that violence is the norm and not the exception in prostitution.”1
  • Among 100 respondents in Canada, 67% had been threatened with a weapon; 91% had  experienced physical assault; 76% had been raped at least once during their prostitution activities; and 67% had been raped more than five times.6
  • 63% of the violence experienced was associated with pimps 8
